As Autism awareness and support continue to grow, a local nonprofit organization (Unique Sweets) is working towards improving the lives of adults with Autism and their families.

Unique Sweets provides opportunities for individuals with Autism to develop skills that promote independence and success in employment while also providing a creative outlet and fostering meaningful relationships within the community.

Unique Sweets Inclusive initiative in Chicago

One way it does this is through the operation of a bakery, where individuals with Autism can learn and develop baking skills in a supportive environment. Unique Sweets also organizes community events such as Outings, pop-up shops, and social gatherings that allow individuals with Autism to showcase their skills and interact with others in the community.

The organization recently announced its plans to open a permanent brick-and-mortar location that will serve as a community hub for individuals with Autism. To raise funds for this project, Unique Suites is hosting an upcoming fundraiser event at a local brewery. Participants can enjoy beer flights and delicious cupcakes while getting to know each other better.

Everyone wants a reason to live.

Evelyn of Unique Sweets stated that these events also create a sense of purpose and community for individuals with Autism, allowing them to feel welcomed and valued within society. “Everyone wants a reason to live,” Evelyn added, and Unique Sweets aims to provide that reason through its bakery and community events.

Evelyn is speaking from her own personal experience as someone whose brother has Autism. She understands the crucial role that acceptance and inclusivity play in the lives of individuals with different abilities.

At the upcoming event, an Autistic child can meet friends, enjoy delicious treats together, and be a part of an accepting community.
