Physicians open small cereal business in support of sons, others with autism

Dr. Berlinda Torres and Dr. Edwin Santa, both esteemed physicians, have made it their lifelong mission to use their expertise to help others, especially the disabled. This has been their guiding purpose since the beginning.

The two doctors welcomed two sons, Gabriel and Daniel, into their family, who were diagnosed with autism. But that diagnosis only strengthened their resolve to ensure that their children would also have a full that diagnosis only strengthened their resolve to ensure that their children would also have a fulfilling and purposeful life, despite the challenges they may face due to their condition.

Edwin and Berlinda’s Parental Journey

After dedicating themselves to their careers for three years, they started a family. With the addition of two young sons, Edwin and Berlinda’s priorities shifted once again as they became committed parents determined to provide their children with all the love and support.

However, when Belinda took her break from work to care for her newborn, she observed some behavior in Gabriel.

Although he was healthy physically, his social interactions weren’t. After consulting with professionals, it was determined that Gabriel had autism when he was 16 months old.

Daniel’s Autism Diagnosis

A couple of years later, their youngest son, Daniel, also received a diagnosis of autism.  This news was devastating for Berlinda, who had always dreamed of being a doctor and now faced the challenge of raising two children with special needs while also pursuing her medical career.

As a result, their plans to move back to Puerto Rico were put on hold as they realized the resources available for their children in Chicago were far superior. Today, 15-year-old Gabriel attends Oak Park River Forest High School, and Daniel attends a specialized school in Naperville for children with autism.
