There has been a remarkable improvement in the Illinois Police Department. Did you know that the Illinois Police Department now has mandatory training for police officers on how to respond to individuals with autism? According to Jeff Schelling, the executive director of the Northern Illinois Training Advisory Board, they take this responsibility seriously by providing convenient and accessible Autism response classes through their training unit.
This enables them to meet required standards set by the law. Jeff adds that they are constantly updating their training methods in order to stay ahead and provide the best practices for responding to individuals with autism.
The Benefit of Autism Training for Police Officer
According to Schelling, in his 32 years of experience as a law enforcement officer, he has met numerous people with autism and has seen how the right approach can make a positive impact on the situation. He believes that by understanding the unique needs and behaviors of individuals with autism, officers can avoid escalating situations and ensure a safer outcome for everyone involved.
In fact, he mentions that it’s not uncommon for police officers to encounter people with autism, which makes this mandatory training even more crucial. He emphasizes that the success of interactions between law enforcement and autistic individuals lies in the hands of well-educated and trained officers.
Inclusivity and understanding in the community
Program coordinator of Easterseals autism program, Lori Davie, also highlights the importance of police training on autism, as it not only benefits officers but also promotes inclusivity and understanding in the community. In her opinion she is excited this program is going into effect come next year.
The curriculum will cover a wide range of topics including identifying characteristics, communication methods (both verbal and non-verbal), sensory issues and de-escalation techniques. According to the General Assembly of Illinois, the Autism Law Enforcement Training Standards Board has been given two years to review and approve this program.
This training is hoped to help create a more comfortable and understanding environment for the autism community when law enforcement is involved.
Understanding and accommodating individuals with autism
We at Illinois Autism recognize and would like to acknowledge the efforts of law enforcement in understanding and accommodating individuals with autism. We believe that this mandatory training program is a step in the right direction toward promoting inclusivity, awareness, and safety for everyone in our community.
We hope this program will continue to evolve and adapt to better serve all individuals, including those with autism, in any situation involving law enforcement.
