Autism treatment from ISrael
New autism interventions could spring from Israeli

With the growing awareness and understanding of autism and what it entails, many parents and educators have observed a gradual increase in children exhibiting behaviors that resemble those associated with the neurodevelopmental disorder.

As Dr. Idan Menashe, director of Israel’s national autism research center, puts it,  these characteristics may have been present in children in the past. Still, it is only now that parents, educators, and professionals are more informed and able to acknowledge them and support these children appropriately both academically and socially.

Autism Diagnosis Rates

There’s even evidence to support this, with a recent Israeli study showing that toddlers aged three years and below (as of 2021) are four times more likely to be diagnosed Autistic compared to previous years, where children aged four and above were twice more likely to receive a diagnosis.

Not to mention that back in the early 2000s, statistics showed that within every batch of 150 children, one would be diagnosed as Autistic. However, in more recent times (2020 to be exact) that number increased to a shocking 1:36 ratio.

These stats were released by the CDC, proving just how prevalent Autism has become within the United States over the years. It’s not just a childhood disorder either, as many adults have also been diagnosed with Autism later in life.

Autistic celebrities

Consider Elon Musk, Sia, Anthony Hopkins, Zuckerberg, and Dan Aykroyd, for example – all these individuals have come out in the public and disclosed their diagnosis with Autism. In the past, being Autistic was stigmatized. Still, with more awareness and understanding, people and celebrities leading the way are now embracing their diagnosis and helping break the associated stereotypes.

A question commonly asked is, does it mean if you’re Autistic, it necessarily means you’ll be successful? If Elon Musk and Bill Gates are successful autistics, then is the disorder really that big of a deal?

Not really. Dr Menashe explains that, first and foremost, autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning it affects everyone differently. The common characteristics are repetitive actions, impaired social functioning, and difficulty with communication and sensory processing. However, beyond that, individuals with autism have varying physical and cognitive symptoms.

This means just because someone is Autistic does not guarantee success or a certain level of intelligence. It simply means they may require a different approach to their learning and ways to navigate the world around them. It also means the person may need accommodation in certain settings to help them thrive, such as a quiet and calm environment or extra time for tasks.

Autistic students may face difficulties in traditional classrooms, such as too many stimuli, noises, and even social interactions that can be overwhelming to them. This can impact the child’s academic performance, self-esteem, mental health, and even their well-being.

Autism Genetic Analysis

Dr. Menashe explains that the best method currently being explored is genetic analysis. In other words, researchers are using a technique known as exome sequencing to investigate potential causes of symptoms or disorders in autistic children and their families.

However, what sets the Israeli research center apart globally is its vast database, which offers valuable insights beyond genetics data.  This comprehensive data enables scientists to understand better the underlying factors contributing to autism and related conditions.
