During this month of Autism awareness, lots of people took part in different events all over the world. One such event was a joint celebration where Kelly Clarkson invited her friends Cristina and Lydia to talk about the duo’s collaboration in writing a novel.
The audience was enthralled as Lydia and Christina shared their journey and how their Autism awareness project came to fruition.
Snoopers & Sneakers
The two co-authors came together to write a book for middle schoolers. The book, “Snoopers & Sneakers,” follows the story of two young individuals with contrasting personalities who struggle to find common ground despite their differences.
The first character is Jane, a curious and smart girl who is often bullied for her autistic tendencies. The second character is Ashley, a social butterfly who finds herself in a difficult position after being ousted from the popular group she used to belong to.
Jean and Ashley
Both girls couldn’t be more different from each other, but fate brings them together when their favorite teacher is arrested on charges of stealing school fundraiser money, and they work to clear the teacher’s name. Christina knew she could easily write the part related to Ashley. However, she needed help with the part that involved the character Jean. This is where Lydia came in; with her keen eye for detail and her love for research, she helped Christina bring the character of Jean to life.
Empathy and understanding
Lydia is not a stranger to Autism. She grew up Autistic herself and has firsthand experience with the misunderstandings and misconceptions that surround it.
In the interview she stated, Autism is an Invisible disability wherein an individual may appear to function “normally” in society, but still face daily challenges that others may not be aware of.
People need to understand that everyone is different and unique in their own way, and it’s crucial to approach individuals with empathy and understanding rather than judgment or assumptions. In their book, they go chapter by chapter, providing insight into the real experiences of individuals with autism through characters Ashley and Jane. This allows readers to understand the challenges and triumphs that individuals with autism face daily.
