Ford event for Autistic people
Ford supports Chicago Department of Health leading on mental health emergencies

If you’ve watched the news lately, you probably have already heard that police and fire department paramedics here in Chicago will no longer comprise the core of Chicago’s Crisis Assistance Response and Engagement (CARE) team. In other words, the responsibility for addressing mental health emergencies has now been transferred solely to those with specialized expertise in this critical area—behavioral health clinicians and emergency medical technicians are set to lead the charge.

It’s a progressive move executed by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who LaShawn Ford has commended for his decisive action.

The mayor’s visionary approach

La Shawd fully endorses the mayor’s visionary approach, viewing it as a necessary evolution from the strategies previously endorsed by the City Council. Ford emphasizes that the success of such initiatives hinges on the involvement of socially adept professionals or, better yet, well-acquainted people who are trained to handle mental health.

Back in 2021, an issue regarding mental health crisis was raised, and it prompted the a by name “treatment not trauma”. As the name points out, it’s prioritizing compassionate care and minimizing the risk of violence or misunderstanding during interventions.

The program was successful because it teamed up with mental Health Professionals and community advocates, who helped devise a comprehensive framework tailored to each neighborhood’s unique needs.

Specialized training and collaborative approaches

For those who may not be aware, in the past, there used to be frequent unresolved tensions between officers and individuals with mental health conditions. As you can guess, these tensions were caused by misunderstandings between law enforcement and individuals. This gap in understanding would lead to frustrations and sometimes dangerous encounters on the part of the disabled person. These scenarios genuinely highlighted a need for specialized training and collaborative approaches.

The best way out was to equip officers with skills tailored to handle such situations delicately and partner with mental health experts who can provide valuable insights and support during critical moments. This collaboration is expected to enhance the overall efficacy of emergency interventions, ensuring they are conducted with respect and sensitivity.
